Danielle with Candoleeza Rice in Dallas
June 28, 2017
"Hello - I am a new 2nd grade teacher at Ramirez Thomas, and one of my students started going to the Boys and Girls Club recently. I just wanted to say thank you for all that you do. She talks constantly about what she gets to do when she goes there... always relating our lessons to the Boys and Girls club, sharing activities with me, and telling me about the people that have inspired her. You are making a huge difference in her life! Thank you! "
On June 28th, nearly 900 guests gathered in Dallas for the Southwest Region Youth of the Year Celebration.
Danielle Trujillo from BGC Santa Fe/Del Norte represented the State of New Mexico. Danielle and seven other teens from states throughout the Southwest Region competed for the Southwest Youth of the Year title and a four-year scholarship totaling $40,000. Those who competed are the state Youth of the Year winners from Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Montana, New Mexico, Texas and Wyoming. All eight teens made it to the finals because of their academic achievements, community service, and leadership abilities, and spoke at the ceremony about their Boys & Girls Club experiences.
The winner, from the Boys & Girls Club of Benton County, Arkansas, will compete for National Youth of the Year in September in Washington, D.C.
In her essay, Danielle wrote “The Club has taught me many things that will stick with me not only through college, but my entire life. I have learned how to step out of my comfort zone, how to be a leader and role model, and how to surround myself with people that bring positivity and happiness to my life.”
